WHITE CRANES

The purpose of the painting can be divided into appreciation and symbolism. Traditionally the old Korean paintings had a greater significance in symbolism which inculcate meanings on natural subjects being plants and animals. Among them, the painting Sipjangsaengdo with ten longevity symbols was at the summit of the imagined landscape paintings that contains the 10 symbols such as sun, clouds, mountains, water, rocks, storks, deer, turtles, pine trees, and lingzhi mushrooms.

Its backgrounds are abstractly expressed using the line drawing technique. Inlaid iridescent light of mother-of-pearl elaborately fill the screen sculpted into shapes of cranes, turtles, and deer as the main axis, emitting magnificent fantasy, giving ecstasy to the viewers.

그림의 용도를 감상과 상징성으로 나눈다면 식물과 동물을 포함해 자연 요소들에 의미를 부여했던 옛 그림들은 상징성에 더 큰 의의가 있다 할 것이다. 그 중에서도 해, 구름, 산, 물, 소나무, 거북, 사슴, 학, 복숭아, 불로초 등 장수를 상징하는 10가지 요소를 그린 십장생도는 그 정점에 있다.

정교하게 한땀한땀 조각한 학, 거북, 사슴 등을 주축으로 선묘를 이용해 추상적으로 표현한 배경들이 스크린을 채우며, 이 이상적인 세계는 자개의 영롱한 빛을 받아 더욱 판타지하고 황홀감을 선사한다.
